The Ford Bronco SUV has taken the off-roading world by storm with their boxy retro design and insane 4x4 capabilities. Clearly, the Bronco is worthy of the hype, but don’t forget about its little brother, the Bronco Sport.
The Bronco Sport might be small, but it can still leave the pavement. For a compact SUV, the Bronco Sport delivers some serious off-road performance!
Is the Ford Bronco Sport the most capable compact SUV?
Like the full-size Bronco, the Bronco Sport features the G.O.A.T. drive modes that allow you to adjust your vehicle’s performance for your terrain. So, whether you’re driving through the sand or the rain, the Bronco Sport can adjust the braking, throttle response and transmission for optimal performance.
Another feature that separates the Bronco Sport from other compact SUVs is the available twin-clutch rear-drive unit. This feature, which is only available on the Badlands trim, allows the Bronco Sport to divert almost all rear axle torque to one of the rear wheels. So even if the other wheels are stuck, the baby Bronco can keep going!
The Bronco Sport isn’t the largest SUV, but it does offer a maximum ground clearance of 8.8 inches which is enough to conquer some seriously rough terrain.
All Bronco Sport SUVs also features a high-performance HOSS suspension system for better off-road handling and capability. The HOSS suspension also reduces body roll and increases the Bronco Sport’s stability when cornering, allowing you to take corners quicker with more confidence.
Unlike the Bronco’s body-on-frame construction, the Bronco Sport is built on a unibody frame like the Ford Escape. While the unibody frame might not be as rugged, it offers a smoother ride and improved fuel economy. While not the most fuel-efficient compact SUV out there, the Bronco Sport does perform well for an all-wheel drive vehicle. The Bronco Sport gets 26 mpg combined city and highway, which is better than the 21 mpg with the Bronco.
The Bronco Sport is available with two different engine options, the stock 1.5L EcoBoost (181 horsepower and 190lb.-ft. of torque) and the upgraded 2.0L EcoBoost (250 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torque). Both engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The 2.0L EcoBoost, which is only available in the Badlands and Heritage Limited trims, gives the Bronco Sport quite a bit of extra power to tear through challenging terrain.
Variety is the spice of life. With six different trim levels on the 2023 model, you can find the perfect Bronco Sport for your lifestyle. There is the base trim, the Big Bend, Heritage Edition, Outer Banks, Badlands and the Heritage Limited Edition. Each trim has its own unique set of features, so you can choose the one that best fits your needs.
If you just want a reliable AWD SUV, the Big Bend trim delivers everything you need without any of the extra off-road features. There is the Badlands and the new Heritage Limited Edition for adventurous off-road enthusiasts. With the 2.0L EcoBoost, increased ground clearance and the advanced 4x4 system, the Badlands and Heritage Limited Edition will have you crawling through the mud and sand with ease.
The Bronco Sport is proof that you can have your cake and eat it too! If you want an SUV that can deliver off-road performance while also giving you a comfortable drive.
