Get the Information You Need to Make the Right Decision
Purchasing a used vehicle is a big step, and it can be a stressful and intimidating process. You’re making a big commitment, and you want the best possible value for what you’re willing to spend. Here at NWMS, we promote an atmosphere that steers clear of the intimidation factor. We want customers to get through this process comfortably and confidently. But the key to the best possible experience of buying a used car or truck starts with one thing – preparation. What questions should you ask when thinking about buying a used truck?
If you’ve got your eye on a used truck, you want to enter into that transaction as prepared as possible. Whether you’re dealing with a private seller or a dealership, there are steps to take and questions to ask. Here are some of the most important steps and questions to ask when you’re buying a used truck.
Before you get to the dealership, here are a few bases you need to cover.
- Know What you Need – Make sure you show up with a specific sense of what you want and need from the truck you plan to buy. It’s an even better idea to have a few specific models/years you plan to look at. Browsing can be fun, but if you feel ready, be ready!
- Know your Budget – Set a price range and stick to it. Check your credit score to get a sense of the financing options you’ll be able to work with. Not quite sure where to start? Why not try consulting our expert financing department?
Questions to Ask When Buying a Used Truck
You know what you’re looking for, you know what you’re able to spend, and you’re heading to the dealership. Be ready to ask these questions!
Where Did This Truck Come From?
Used vehicles find their way to dealerships in all kinds of ways. That could include trade-ins, auctions, and even other dealers. It’s important to know where the truck came from in order to learn more about the maintenance it’s received. When you get a truck from Northwest Motorsport, you can rest easy knowing it’s passed our 43-point safety inspection.
Can the Dealer Provide the Truck’s History?
It’s always a good idea to ask a dealership for a vehicle’s service records. However, if you’re not shopping with a tried and true name like Northwest Motorsport, can you trust it? Well, there’s no need to worry about bias when you can get the vehicle history report from a third party.
At NWMS, we are happy to provide you with any vehicle’s Carfax report, but not all dealers are willing to do so. Always ask, and if the answer is no, you should obtain one on your own (although that should convince you to look elsewhere). You need all the information you can get about previous owners and the vehicle’s maintenance history.
If you’re serious about buying the truck, it’s also a good idea to ask if you can bring it to an independent mechanic for an inspection. If the truck is a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle from the manufacturer, you should ask for them to provide you with the most recent inspection.
Ask to Take it for a Test Drive
Test drives are important, and you should never buy a used car or truck without first taking a thorough test drive. If the dealer claims to have some problem with this, that is absolutely a red flag. The test drive is your opportunity to discover whether this is the truck for you.
When you’re on the road, listen for any strange noises. See how the brakes react or if there’s any problem getting the truck up to various speeds. There’s a lot you can find out very quickly if you’re paying close enough attention.
Ask the Dealer about the Purchase Agreement
When you’re buying your next used truck, you’re not just paying the sticker price. You’re also paying for fees and services, and you need to know how much your truck really costs. It’s extremely important to thoroughly check and double-check the agreement. Ask about warranty coverage and what to expect in terms of maintenance costs in the long term. You want a comprehensive picture of the financial commitment you’re entering into.
Skip the Stress, Prepare these Questions when Buying a Used Truck!
Where you purchase your truck from matters just as much as what kind of truck you buy. If you want the best truck, go to the best dealer! Hey, maybe we’re biased, but we’ll cast our vote for Northwest Motorsport being the best in the business! However, if you’re not blessed enough to live close enough to visit or have us deliver, you just have to be prepared! Know what you want, and know what questions to ask when buying a used truck, and you’ll walk away with everything you need.
