All that You Need to Know About Toyota’s Lifted 4Runner
If you want to ride in comfort and style but still want something that can bear wild terrains, look no further than the Toyota Lifted 4Runner! A beast of a vehicle, this mid-sized SUV’s sharp appearance has only undergone minor facelifts since the fifth generation was introduced in 2009. It’s a classic look for a classic ride, and it’s sure to make you stand out from the crowd.
But wait, what could possibly be more eye-catching than this boxy gargantuan? Well, if you’re familiar with Northwest Motorsport and what we like to do, you know what we’re going to say next. That’s right, Toyota has really outdone itself this time; we introduce to you the Lifted 4Runner! But before we all get too excited, we’ll crank it down to the first gear. Let’s tell you everything you need to know before you buy Toyota’s Lifted 4Runner.
A Short History on the Toyota 4Runner
Don’t worry, we won’t bog you down with the details, we just want you to know why we think this vehicle is so special. The 4Runner was introduced into the market in 1984 as a modified version of a Hilux pickup. You heard right, this behemoth started its life as a truck, and it even had a removable fiberglass shell.
It was known for having the highest ground clearance of any SUV released at that time. By this point, you know what we’re thinking when we hear “highest ground clearance”. It might not have been so apparent at the time, but Toyota set the stage for the perfect lifted truck.
The second generation of this vehicle was notable for adopting a full metal shell and four doors. This created an off-road experience that the whole family could enjoy. The most important change from the third-generation to the current fifth-generation was the size of the Lifted 4Runner. We don’t know what Toyota was feeding this monster, but generation after generation it kept growing in size.
What are the Specs on the 4Runner?
We’re glad you ask! When you take a peek at what’s under the hood, you’ll find a 4.0 Liter V6 engine. This gives the 4Runner 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque that allows a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. To get a better understanding of what that towing capacity means for you, check out this article that breaks down the numbers and gives you an idea of what you can hitch.
Where this goliath really shines is on your off-road adventures. It has a body-on-frame setup that gives it truck-like ride quality, high ground clearance, and all kinds of hardware that make off-roading an absolute breeze. It comes standard with a locking rear differential, which optimizes the amount of traction that the 4Runner can get on rough terrains.
An optional feature is Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), a hydraulic system that understands when you’re driving on pavement or hitting the trails. Stabilizer bars are key for reducing body lean when you’re taking sharp fast turns on the pavement. They also prevent wheel articulation while you’re off-roading. For more on how it works, check out this video.
Some other features that make this a great off-road vehicle include Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC). HAC keeps the SUV from rolling backward on steep inclines when your truck shifts weight switching from the brakes to the accelerator. DAC selectively applies the brakes to help you control your speed when you’re descending a steep or slippery incline.
The 4Runner also boasts impressive skid plates that protect the engine, the front suspension, the fuel tank, and the transfer case. It also comes equipped with a full-sized spare for those times when you let a little too loose. The 4Runner spares no expense when it comes to your off-road enjoyment. Where do I Start with a Lifted 4Runner?
Like any great off-road vehicle, there are a number of different ways you can lift this SUV into a bonafide mud monster. A lifted 4Runner is a sight to behold, but only if the lift kit is installed right. There are some questions you have to ask yourself first, like what do I want my ride height to be? How high can I lift it before I have to consider upgrading the wheels and tires? Most importantly, what kind of lift kit should I get? NWMS is passionate about our off-roaders, and we want to make sure you consider all the options available to you. Lucky for you, we’ve already written a guide on lift kits! Whether you’re considering lifting your current ride or looking into getting yourself a lifted 4Runner, give us a call and our suspension experts will be happy to answer any of your questions.
Does the Lifted 4Runner Deliver on Creature Comforts?
We know we’ve painted the lifted 4Runner as a rugged vehicle that can handle any of your off-road needs, but we want you to know you’re riding in the lap of luxury. Standard models come with SofTex upholstery, a synthetic leather material that is super comfortable to sit on and easy to clean. Trust us, SofTex is a godsend when your kid’s sippy cup gets knocked over while you’re hitting rocky terrain. And here’s an added bonus: 4Runners have heated seats!
With a roomy interior to boot, the lifted 4Runner fits a family of five comfortably. Another feature that will surely be a hit with your family is the ability to save your seat settings.
