When shopping for a used truck, you want to make sure you’re buying a rig that is tough and resilient. What could possibly be tougher than a used Ram truck?
For over 40 years, Ram trucks have built a legacy of hard-working trucks constructed to thrive in any environment and handle the toughest jobs with ease.
Dodge introduced the Ram trucks in 1981, but the Ram mascot had previously been used to represent some of Dodge’s toughest trucks since 1933. The Ram mascot perfectly matched the attitude of Dodge’s new line of trucks. Bold and adventurous, these animals effortlessly travel through the treacherous mountain terrain. This headstrong animal displays the strength and aggressive attitude that has made Ram trucks an American staple.
One of the biggest years in Ram history was 1989, which saw the Cummins Turbodiesel engine providing a whopping 400 lb.-ft. of torque.
In 2009, Ram trucks separated from Dodge and became its own brand. Dodge focused on their popular line of cars, including the powerful Challenger and Charger, while Ram focused on their hard-working trucks. The result has been a success for both, with the popularity of Ram trucks continuing to grow.
If you’re interested in getting behind the wheel a used Ram, you are going to have to answer some important questions. Should I get a Ram 1500 or a Ram 2500? Cummins Turbo Diesel or Hemi V8? Big Horn or Laramie? With a used Ram, there is no wrong answer, but it’s important to find the perfect truck to match your lifestyle.
The most popular truck in the Ram lineup is the icon Ram 1500. The half-ton truck is the perfect combination of power and convenience. Just as comfortable driving through crowded city streets as it is on the jobsite.
Along with a powerful engine, every good work truck has to be functional. Every inch of the Ram 1500 serves an important purpose. One of the most popular features on Ram trucks is the RamBox Cargo Management System, a storage compartment on the side of the truck bed. The fully water-tight compartment can serve as a cooler or additional storage for your tools. The bed in a Ram truck is also built to withstand the heavy wear and tear that comes from hauling heavy cargo.
If you need even more muscle than the Ram 1500 offers, the Ram 2500 heavy-duty truck gives you even more power thanks to a beefed-up powertrain featuring two iconic engines, the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel and the 6.4L Hemi V8. While not as muscular as a Ram 3500 dually, the Ram 2500 can tow and carry with the best of them without taking up too much space.
When you drive a used Ram 2500 you won’t have to settle. You can stay comfortable in the roomy, luxurious cabin while your rig works hard.
For the most towing power, the heavy-duty Ram 3500 is all about muscle. These monstrous rigs can tow even the largest fifth-wheel trailers without breaking a sweat thanks to the ridiculous amount of torque generated by the Cummins Turbo Diesel or Hemi V8 engine.
To get the most towing and payload capacity out of your Ram 3500, a dually is the way to go. By adding on two extra rear wheels, the rig gets better traction and features a stronger rear axle. Due to their durability and toughness a used Ram 3500 dually will retain its value better than most trucks because they are such in-demand rigs.
The simple answer is that both engines provide a ridiculous amount of power and will both give your used Ram plenty of bite to do just about anything. The Hemi V8 delivers more horsepower and payload than the Cummins Turbo Diesel. On the other hand, the Cummins Turbo Diesel has the edge in torque and towing capacity. So, if you want to squeeze the most towing power out of your rig, the Cummins diesel is the way to go. The Cummins diesel also gets better fuel efficiency than the gasoline-powered Hemi, but the cost of diesel fuel is currently more expensive.
